Canon EOS 1100D Full Review with ISO (Digital Rebel T3)

This time I made a review for the popular DSLR Canon EOS 1100D (Digital Rebel T3). For $ 460 plus camera kit lens EF-S 18-55mm IS is the successor of the EOS 1000D are selling successfully in the past, with the primary segmentation is the budget minded who are looking for simple camera, a nice but affordable. EOS 1100D is presented to the competitors like the Nikon D3100, Sony A390 and Pentax Kr. What kind of review that I made to the tiny this?

Canon implement a strategy that is somewhat unique in doing their DSLR product segmentation. When first we consider a three-digit EOS (350D, 400D, 450D, etc.) is a beginner camera, so now that so digitlah EOS DSLR four basic classes of Canon's true. When three years ago, the EOS 1000D are designed so basic and simple, now on the 1100D there are a number of successors such as sensor resolution increases, the number of AF points, metering module, the processor and the most important is the HD movie. Some features of the 1100D 550D/600D looked overlap with many similarities in the sense that confuse us. So it's natural that I predict the EOS 1100D will repeat the success with achieving high sales, especially if we do not need all the advantages that exist in the three-digit EOS.

Let's look at what is offered by this basic DSLR:

  • 12 MP CMOS sensor
  • Digic IV processor
  • 720p HD movie recording capability
  • metering with 63 zone capability (focus, color and luminance)
  • module using AF with 9 points (one in the middle cross type)
  • achieving ISO 6400
  • burst speed of 3 fps
  • 2.7-inch LCD, resolution 230 thousand pixels
  • HDMI out
  • sold with the kit lens 18-55mm IS mark II

Not bad right? When compared with the EOS 600D, then the difference is only in megapixels (12 MP vs 18 MP), the resolution of HD video (720p v 1080p) and slightly faster (3 fps vs 3.7 fps). Additionally 600D has a high resolution LCD screen that can be folded and can be triggering external flash wirelessly. But both are equal in terms of design (including pentamirror and plastic body), 9 point AF module, 63 zone metering module (which is exactly the same as the EOS 7D) and ISO 6400.

Physical Review

We start it. EOS 1100D body made of plastic material with a texture that is too smooth with no texture, somewhat impressed cheap. Gripnya will feel relatively little for people who have hands like my rather large, but it might feel right when a gripping are women.

Design in general is relatively typical EOS 1100D beginners with an area over there is the ON-OFF, one wheel to adjust the exposure, a mode dial and one button to turn on the flash. Everything is concentrated on the right so it is easy to reach the right index finger. I personally do not like the exposure setting wheel design that plays with your index finger as in all Canon DSLR. Mode dial itself is composed of manual exposure such as P, TV, AV, M and A-DEP, and various scene modes such as flash off, Creative Auto, Potrait, Landscape and Movie. The green box is AUTO which is completely automated including ISO and flash settings. There are no user preset mode dial setting on the EOS 1100D, considering that this camera is not aimed at the pros. Flash hot shoe in the middle and flanked by a built-in flash that supports E-TTL II.

At the front there is a metal mount to attach the lens, with two colors namely white dots (for EF-S lenses) and red (for EF lenses). So the EOS 1100D is compatible with any Canon lens, both EF and EF-S. Inside was a mirror that covers the sensor and the data for some of the pin contact lenses. No dust-removal system in the EOS 1100D, to dust you should go into the menu to remove the mirror and clean the dust manually. Next to the lens mount a lamp to reduce red-eye caused by contact with the flash of light, and a mono microphone on the logo EOS 1100D which serves to record sound during movie mode.

EOS 1100D equipped with kit lens EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The plastic mount lens with a filter diameter of 58mm and is equipped with vibration damper (stabilizer). On the left there are two levers, the levers Auto or Manual focus (AF-MF) and another lever to activate the stabilizer. As a result of APS-C sensor with a crop factor 1.6 x lens kit then this will have a focal equivalent to 29-88mm which is sufficient for everyday needs. Manual focus ring found on the front lens rotates when the camera and go look for focus, typical cheap kit lenses in general, in one word is not comfortable to wear lenses for manual focus.

At the rear, where a variety of important buttons and LCD screen, arranged quite nicely. Unfortunately the design of most of the buttons are too aligned with the body makes it difficult to suppress (in my first button on the 1000D even better is pressed). In the EOS 1100D are important keys to quickly access the menu of the 'Q' (Quick Menu) and there is also a button with a red dot for Live view (which also serves to initiate and terminate a video recording). The good news, Canon has always given two functions on the four direction arrow keys. So the up arrow key shortcuts also work to replace the ISO, the right arrow key to change the AF mode, the down arrow key to toggle selection WB and left arrow keys for selection of the various drive modes. A great benefit considering the EOS 1100D is actually intended for beginners. Optical viewfinder on the EOS 1100D has 95% coverage and 0.8 times magnification, of course not the best but bright enough to be seen. There is a small wheel to adjust the diopter setting to focus the viewfinder for those with glasses. Unfortunately there are no sensors that detect when we peeked in the viewfinder, so the LCD will remain lit when our eyes against the window.

At the bottom of the base metal tripod from its position parallel to the lens. There is also info about the serial number and text if the camera was made in Taiwan. Placement of LP-E10 battery and memory card is at the bottom with the same door, while the side door when opened will reveal to the remote port, HDMI port and a USB port. You find a port for an external mic? Sorry, no ..

Display on the screen for Quick Menu will look like this:

From the info on the screen can be known with a fast mode in use, the shutter, aperture, ISO etc.. There is also information the rest of the battery and how many photos can still be taken with existing memory. When the mode dial is rotated to the Creative Auto mode will look like this:

This mode is characteristic of the DSLR beginners, intended to ease who do not understand how to create background blur and so on. In Nikon D3100 Guide Mode there are relatively the same as this.

Performance

EOS 1100D camera is not designed to work fast. But apparently the time required for start-up, shutter lag, shot-to-shot and find the focus I feel fast enough. I tested the focus of this camera with kit lens and 50mm f/1.8 lens which unfortunately they happen instead of type USM, so it certainly focus speeds will not be too fast. The sound of the motor focus lens that is looking too loud, but the focus accuracy is maintained thanks to a 9 point AF module wore. We can change the AF mode from Auto to manual selection by pressing the AF button with right thumb (right hand button star button). For info, in the viewfinder can also be seen a 9 point AF, and will light up red when active.

To focus modes are provided the same as other Canon DSLR that there is ONE SHOT mode (stationary objects), AI SERVO and AI FOCUS is for moving objects. When using AI Servo mode, the shutter button is pressed so that the camera must remain able to continue to focus. I feel the speed and accuracy is pretty good AI SERVO when searching for moving objects, even when using USM lens will definitely feel better.

EOS 1100D does not provide spot metering feature, because the choice of metering modes are only available three modes Evaluative, Center Weighted and Partial. As the default for most shooting conditions can be used to Evaluative mode, but for more contrast lighting conditions that can use another mode.

Wore 12 MP CMOS sensor combined with a Digic IV processor makes the EOS 1100D is a high ISO capabilities are impressive, even at ISO 6400 noisenya though still relatively awake and color reproduction is not too off the mark. ISO 6400 is the maximum ISO for EOS 1100D, there is no expansion in the ISO setting Custom Function. For best results from high ISO on this camera can use its own RAW file and then processed in the computer to reduce in noise.

Live-view mode is the photo:

Live-view during movie mode:
Canon EOS 1100D Physical Review with ISO

For those not accustomed to using a DSLR, will feel a bit weird when aiming through the viewfinder. For a modern DSLR camera that has been providing live-view facility, including the EOS 1100D. When the live-view button is pressed, the mirror's voice rose as a sign of a camera into a live-view mode, then the LCD screen will display the preview image as non-DSLR camera. Performance as a live-view cameras are also good, with a color preview screen accurate and not oversized while the camera is moved. EOS 1100D can even display a histogram in the upper right corner. Auto focus mode during live-view and record a movie when there are three options, namely the detection of contrast (Live AF), face detection and phase detection with 9 AF points (the latter is most quickly lock the focus but it will be dark for a moment the LCD). By contrast detection, we can move the auto focus box in the middle to anywhere in the photo by pressing the four directions. Once the shutter button half pressed, the camera needs 2-3 seconds to lock focus. Quite a long time indeed, will even get worse if the light conditions are less or photographing something minimal contrast. So that use this mode only to photograph objects that are not moving, enough light and enough contrast. The camera will leave the live-view mode when in a certain time there is no any operation (about 5 seconds), in order to prevent the sensors becoming too hot.

There are no other options for video resolution than HD movie 1280 x 720 pixels. The choice is simply whether we wanted to use 30 fps or 25 fps only. By pressing the button during a live-view mode dial in the position of Movie, then the camera will start recording a video. Display on the screen will change to 16:9 format in video recording mode according to HD video format. Picture Style and Auto Lighting Optimizer can also be applied at the time of recording video, although unfortunately no manual exposure settings during video recording, even the ISO could not be replaced (there's only compensation and exposure lock only). Moreover there is no continuos focus when recording video, the camera only once during the initial search focused record, then if you want to change the focus will only be through by turning the manual focus ring on the lens, or pressing the shutter button (but this feature needs to be enabled first on the menu ).

By pressing the playback button (blue triangle shape) will go into the images or videos on a memory card. By pressing the info button will display various information on the screen about the photo such as the histogram parameters and other data such as the picture above. Although classified as EOS 1100D camera beginners, very complete information on the screen including an RGB histogram exists. Unfortunately as usual, Canon does not provide information on how focal lenses are used on each photograph

Shown in even the highest ISO images from the EOS 1100D is still quite good, especially when enough light. A satisfactory performance in my opinion. You can calmly use ISO 1600 as a boundary between quality and noise, are ISO 3200 upwards can be chosen when conditions force.

Conclusion

In closing, my impression of this camera is quite satisfactory, especially in terms of quality images and high ISO. Backed with a 12 MP CMOS sensor and Digic 4 are qualified, about the images would have no doubt. For best image results are now looking for a better lens, shoot RAW or maximize use Picture Style only. With the price of 4.5 million today, a modern DSLR with IS kit lens, HD movie and could have a 9 point AF would have been classified as best buy. Moreover, a variety of EF lenses, the EF-S and 3rd party brands (Sigma, Tokina, etc.) with the Canon mount can be used all without worry of compatibility issues auto focus. Weak point of this camera is on things that are not directly related to the resulting image, eg body material that is not semantap EOS above, the LCD screen is less bulky and less detailed and there are some features that are omitted (spot metering, anti-dust, manual exposure when recording video). Also this camera burst just 3 fps which is still deemed less quickly.

This camera is suitable for you who: still a beginner, was studying photography, just for the photos / videos family, hobbyists, not satisfied with the results of a small sensor camera photographs, or who need cameras for photography classes.

The camera is less suitable for those of you who: enthusiast (seriously pursue photography), often outdoors with erratic weather (rain, dust, etc.), often photographing sports / action / journalist, makes a serious DSLR to create video clips, it needs a lot of digital effects in camera, or is often photographed with the above ISO 6400.
